S&S 44 and staysail
We are a new 3-men finnish group sailing S&S 44/44 SAFA since 04/2013. We have sailed only sloops (Finngulf 33, Dehler 34, H-boat) - so we liked to ask experienced S&S 44 sailors hints how and when to use staysail - wind conditions (angle, windspeed) and combination: which forestay sail. SAFA's rig is with single-spreaders. Rgds, SAFA-team.

Dear SAFA-team
When the staysail is used together with another headsail it needs to be sheeted at 10 degrees from the staysail stay. There may be screw-in sheeting points for this near the mast.
The staysail is also a good choice when there is too much wind for a bigger headsail.
Kind regards
Lars

Thanks Lars, me must test this. There are plugins for blocks on the deck near the mast.

We use a Profurl NX 2.5 furler for our cutter sail. Cutter sail is hosted with a 2:1 vectran halyard. We do not use a stay.
When we use the genua only lowering the cutter sail is very easy, quick tacks are possible then.

   SAFA.

I have rigged my staysail permanently as I do a lot of single handed sailing. I use mine when 1. Reaching. 2. In  light winds close hauled. 3. In heavy winds close hauled and the roller genoa is fully rolled up.

With 2 or 3 reefs and the staysail the yacht is almost bomb proof. The sheeting angle is not known. I moved the original long genoa track which ran outside the shrouds many years ago to the inside of the deck so close to the windows. I use two sets of genoa cars. One set forward by the shrouds for the staysail with the sheets inside the shrouds. The second set of genoa cars which are used for the genoa are towards the cockpit and the sheets run outside the shrouds.

If you go to www.yachtingmonthly/reviews  Swan 411 you will see the set up working.
