Hello Peter and Matteo,

Many thanks for your informative inputs. I have now plenty to think about and it appear that it is not such a good idea to increase the thickness of the inner stay for all the reasons that you both mention.

Phillipe, I think you have received very well informed replies. I have replaced my entire mast, boom and rig with carbon with the exception of the inner forestay (which is my dearest friend). A hanked on staysail brings out the best qualities in our boats. We have changed the stowage of the stay by doing away with the half moon business as described by Matteo, I share his dislike of it banging around the mast! Best, Rob. Sarabande 47/029

Hello Rob,
Could you please be more specific about how you arranged for your new storage configuration of the inner stay. I actually would like to do away even with the two teak bars on the deck where the end of the stay is fitted when not on.

Yes, Rob, a picture please! I have to stow my inner forestay when I am using the spinnaker pole. If there is a better way, please show it. I am always willing to pay you my sincerest form of flattery by duplicating your invention!

Here are some pictures which I hope shows what we have tried to achieve. The idea was to make a break in the stay which allowed a shortened stay to be stowed by lashing against the turnbuckle on the forward shroud. The photograph shows a temporary lashing to demonstrate. I wanted the stay to be away from the mast and not interfere with a tacking genoa. The forward shroud seems the best point. To set the stay means simply re-joining the longer tack end which includes the turnbuckle.

The compromise I have made is that now the hanked sail does not fall completely to the deck, but releasing a couple of hanks soon sorts it. Leaving the sail hanked on and in a bag is not quite so straightforward.

Thank you Rob. It seems to be a good solution. Let me see what I can come up with myself, with inspiration from your system. I let you know.

Dear all
I note that the stowed inner forestay banging on the mast is considered a problem. Suggest that small hooks are added on the leading edge of the spreaders, located so they hold the stay off the mast. Then the half moon stowage can be used as before.
Kind regards
Lars

Now there is a good idea! Why didn't I think of that? A small hook would also keep my spinnaker pole topping lift away from the mast. Thank you Lars! You are a GENIUS!

Dear Lars,

Would it be possible to give me a supplier (or a few) for the stops on these tracks? The stops are broken, the knobs are broken off.

I don't know the dimensions, I think the tracks are the originals.

Fair winds,

Gerrit
