Mast radius on a 48
Hi all,
does anyone know the radius of the top section of the original Nautor mast on a 48?
We plan to install a pair of foldable mast steps near the top for maintenance facilitation. So far, we have found one manufacturer of aluminium steps which are offered in two sizes, differing in the curve of the base plate. One will fit a mast section radius of 122mm, the other of 290mm. Hence my question -- I'd like to order the parts before we unstep the mast, and unfortunately the mast and the boat are two thousand kilometers from here, so I cannot simply take a measure. I am inclined to go with the larger radius because I believe the consequence of a bad fit are less problematic, but if I can avoid a bad fit altogether, I'd definitely prefer it. Any help is appreciated.
Best regards and fair winds,

Dear Martin
The mast radius is about 218 mm, but near the top you have the tapered section with a slice taken out, and the radius contains a bend. Be prepared to put in spacers.
Kind regards

Great -- that is what I hoped for. Thank you, Lars!

... and a follow-up question: when you mentioned spacers, I thought of the gray-blue material that is underneath many of the mast fittings and that looks almost like some kind of putty. Do you know what that is, provided it is original and has not been added by a previous owner?
Thanks again,

If this putty is hard Plastic Padding it could be original, otherwise not. In case there is a gap between the foldable step base and mast at the fastener positions it would be advisable to put in aluminium spacers, the putty may not be strong enough in shear.
Best regards
Lars
