Nautor original chain hook
Dear All,

I have been asked to post JPG's of my chain hook, original made by Nautor. It is quite useful, as you can easily couple it to the chain and very quickly release it if in a hurry, and (of course!) designed and made to last for a lifetime.

This is for a 8 mm chain, for bigger ones you have to change measurements.

Fair winds!

Thank you Matteo for these pictures, that hook is indeed an elegant solution worth some musing.
Just a question for anybody interested in speculating about it: is the second longitudinal slot toward the stern really necessary? If not, only one centred shackle might suffice.
The slot and the twin shackles seem to be necessary if the chain is perfectly in line with the rope but, apparently, this is not the actual situation.

Dear Daniel
Your observation is correct, if the chain is under high load and you want to unload it with a line pulling in the same direction the second slot is required.
Ships use similar systems for unloading their windlasses, and there are a number of variations on the theme.
Best regards

Is it possible to buy one of these anywhere?

Thanks

Hi Matteo and Florence. Very nice pictures indeed.
There is a good chain hook in the Osculati catalogue, and we have been using it for many years with great satisfaction. Different dimesions for 8 mm chain, and 10 and above. We prefer to install it ouside of the bow roller as this avoids the noise of the chain rubbing on rocks on the bottom getting into the boat.
Sorry if you feel this is obvious!
Fair winds and happy sailing.

Thank you very much for the links.
I appreciate it. Just wondering ,for the aft block would large backing plates made of G10, Carbon or stainless inside the anchor locker be an idea? .

With a great help from Matteo I was able to make a technical drawing of the chain-hook. I am not sure it is identical to the original but it is quite close.
As the original, the size of this is for a 8 mm chain; does anyone have suggestions on which critical sizes should be increased for a 10 mm chain apart from the obvious ones which are affected by the different shape of the chain links?
For example the stainless steel sheet thickness of the main body should be brought from the present 6mm to 7 or even 8 mm?
Comments and suggestions are welcome.
