Swan 43 Keel Bolt Pockets
This is for the Professor.

Awhile back the professor had requested confirmation about the use of keel pockets for access to keel bolts on Swan 43 hull #46.

The first photo clearly shows a rectangular outline of what I believe is one of the keel pockets. The second photo shows location of at least two of the pockets during recent keel re-fairing.

Hope this is some useful information for everyone.

Regards,

Hiro

Dear Hiro
Thank you for posting the photos.
Assume the first one was taken on starboard side.
Could you pls point out the location of the two patches of interest on port side?
Have you tensioned the keel bolts as it appears there is no crack between keel and hull?
Kind regards
Lars

Hi professor:

Attached is a photo with the two keel pocket locations on the port side highlighted with white rectangles. A little hard to see, sorry.

I have not tightened the keel bolts but have been routinely fairing the joint every season now for the past 6 years. Would like to try to tighten the keel bolts eventually but it would mean removing the mast step for access to the two forward bolts? You had mentioned that the most forward keel bolt might have been installed from the outside without keel pocket due to slimness of forward keel section.

Kind regards,

Hiro

Hello Professor:

My apologies for this fragmented posting of the keel pockets. This image is of the second keel pocket recently exposed during routine keel fairing.

Regards,

Hiro

Dear Hiro
Thank you for the information
It is believed there are 13 keel bolts, either 3/4" or M20 thread, most of them pairs
Suggest you count the matted over visible bolts, this would indicate how many are hidden under the mast step.
Kind regards
Lars

Dear Hiro
I am told that there is a major error in the number of bolts I gave, let's see what you find

years ago i took a few measurements of the keel bolt locations on my 43 when i had the water tanks out. Measurements were taken from inside the boat with the mast step serving as the center line. The bolt diameter was3/4". Each measurement represents 2 bolts side by side.
Forward of CL line 2", aft of CL 9", 16", 24",30",37", 48". There may be more behind the 48" one, but I couldn't access them. So at least 14 bolts
