SWAN 48 - NEW ENGINE I am thinking of replacing my old westerbeke 58 hp engine with a new one. The engine bed has been already been modified to accept the westerbake some 20 years ago , including the aft cabin locker which is now dedicated to the gearbox end exaust. I would prefer not to have a turbo-charged one , even if I know that yanmar and Volvo-penta 75 hp would be the easiest choice. Do you have any suggestion? thanks sergio Clarion of Skye 48/45

Sergio,
You could consider 75 hp Kubota Beta BV3300, 65 hp Mitsubishi based Sole Mini-74 and 71 hp Westerbeke 71C. All these engines are naturally aspirated. My opinion is that avoiding turbo shouldn't be a criteria nowadays. Perhaps you'll end up to the same conclusion after having checked the weights and dimensions of the engines. Thanks for your answer
My only concern is that , as far as I have been told, turbo engines needs to run almost always above 2000 rpm to avoid any damage to the main shaft. With my actual propeller (autoprop) I can easily reach 7.5 kn at 1800/2000 rpm . but this is only one opinion..... sergio/Clarion of Skye

Hi, I have just replaced a Perkins 4.154 with a Nanni 5-Cylinder Kubota based block. 2600rpm. 64hp normally aspirated. Loses 100kgs and purs wih a maxprop. Recommend it!
