38 Mast Rake
Professor . I am fitting a new Facnor FD190 furler to my One Ton rigged 38 (1976)
Can you confirm the mast rake is supposed to be 10" aft, without any hydraulic backstay pressure on? Secondly , is this measured at the boom?
I have tried to adjust it using the shoe , but only achieved 2" . Paradoxically I do have considerable weather helm, will the increased rake help this or shall I go for a compromise of 6" ??
Thankyou
Alasdair

Dear Alasdair

The recommended mast rake for Swan 38 is 10" with the backstay slack, measured to the boom.

The present headstay length may prevent the masthead from moving further aft, an additional toggle would help

If the yacht has weather helm it is suggested that attention is paid to three things:

- Shrouds are pre-tensioned so they stay tight on the leeward side at normal heeling angles

- Backstay ram used to tension headstay

- The sails are flattened properly in higher winds.

More detailed advice available on request

Kind regards

Lars
