Swan 41 steering cables

A quick question for Lars:

I want to carry a spare set of steering cables. These seem to be 6mm flexible stainless wire. What was the original specification for these and what length is needed? A local rigger has sugested one of the modern carbon fibre rope types instead of wire. Obviously durability with many flexures is most important.

  thank you, Cosmo Little

Cosmo Little Two 6 mm 7x19 stainless wires each 2120 mm long are needed, with a thimble fitting the chain at one end. The chain is 20 mm metric, wire length measured to center of thimble hole.
Nautor used custom round thimbles attached with a swaged fitting.
My experience is that steering cables of fiber rope need more maintenance and earlier replacement. Their life length can be extended with special treatment of the rope cover.
Kind regards
Lars

Dear Sergio
Otherwise similar to the 41, but diameter is 7 mm, and the length 2160 mm each.

Dear Lars,
I am sorry because it may become annoying but I would be interested at the same data regarding the 411.
In order to avoid more requests, may I suggest that you post a table with the original factory length of the steering cables for all S&S Swan?
I am sure that all members will be very grateful!

Dear OwnersUnfortunately this information has not been recorded for the oldest models. It would be very helpful if owners of Swan 36, 37, 40, 43, and 55 could report their steering cable lengths and diameters. This would make the table more complete.Best regardsLars

Lars, Would it be possible to tell us what measurement , steering wire to order for our swan 38 .
Also can you help in explaining how to remove the top flat plate covering the binnacle,we have removed stainless compass housing, we have also drilled out rivets round the side, is it a question of just tapping the top off? we are a little nervous as we have had our binnacle profesional resprayed. hope you can help.

Dear John
Steering cable information is posted in the Maintenance section under Manuals.
The pedestal cover plate is attached with small Allen head set screws located in four positions around the circumference. The cover plate joint is 2 inches above the wheel shaft, shown by the waist, and the set screws are just above the joint. It sounds as you have assumed the set screws to be rivets. If they are removed completely the cover plate should come off.
Kind regards
Lars
