Dear Carl,

yes, all later S&S Swan (some of the early ones, e.g. 36, 40... had just one)  had two stripes, and they have a specific shape.

If the bottom stripe has been covered with antifouling it means the boat is too heavy and not sailing on the original waterline (there should be two trim screws on top of the designed water lines (DWL), and designed floating should be 12 inch. lower, honestly a goal quite impossible to get when the boat is in her cruising mode! See below pic).

There is a document among "technical papers" on how they should be properly drafted, if you are unable to find it please let me know, I will send it to you.

Decision to be made! And need your views on this one...

Galatea currently does not have a radar. I'm contemplating to have the yard install a radar pole on the stern to put the radar dome there as well as a starlink antenna. Alternative would be to put it traditionally in the mast.

I like the idea to minimize weight in the mast and less clutter for sails and lines to get stuck in the radar... also in the worst case in case the mast breaks, still the pole with vhf antenna etc...

On the other hand, a pole means more clutter on the stern.

Any views or experiences anyone can share on this?

Best regards,

Carl (Galatea - 41/010)

Hi Carl,

Radar should not be on the mast in my opinion.

I plan to use this solution for Mallemuk:

Hi Bjorn,

Thanks a lot for your answer. Looks like a nice solution. Just out of curiosity, why don't you prefer a mast mount?

Best regards,

Carl (Galatea / 41-010)

Hereby a short update. We discovered some more extensive damage in the laminate of one of the topsides. Nothing to worry about but here you can see the repair. Otherwise, all other spidercracks have been fixed and in the coming days Galatea will be made ready for painting the topsides (Majestic Blue). Boot tops will be white. Just not sure about the 'Swan stripe': either white or gold... what would you guys do?

Best regards,

Carl (Galatea - 41/010)

Hi Carl, Ie just spotted our tread and the work seems incredible!  I see you have a watertight bulkhead for the anchor locker, a nice addition. On Maje (41/47) I've 30m chain and 30m warp. Nice for keeping the weight down but the splice needs redone every couple of years, so the warp gets shorter! I'd question the need for radar depending on your cruising area I suppose, maybe needed on the Eastern seaboard. Also good for spotting squalls mid Atlantic on nights with no moon, but otherwise heavy and not great for one's health either at deck level? I'll try to post my boot top. As Mattel says it is hard to keep the boat high enough that the lowest line stays above the waterline. I'm loving the thread, congratulations and I'll check back in soon. BW, David

  1. The scanner is much less vulnerable to damage from an errant halyard or sail.
  2. High mounted scanner position has no real benefits as small targets, like buoys, don’t show up much over a mile regardless of scanner height and large targets, like ships, show at 10 miles—plenty of room to plot and take avoiding action.
  3. Putting the scanner high can be a disadvantage since it will be subjected to more motion in a seaway.
  4. A scanner on the mast is more difficult to service than one on a pole and even help you if the cable needs replacing.
  5. Mast mounted radars are very vulnerable to damage when the mast is un-stepped.
  6. I don’t like the added weight aloft.

Hi David,

Thanks a lot for your input! I like the idea of keeping the weight down in the bow. The combination of chain and warp sounds like a good option! Galatea has a 15kg bruce anchor, but would like to change it to an Ultra (seen a lot of positive comments on the forum). Wondering if 16kg would be enough (on their website they recommend the 21kg version).

Best regards,

Carl

Hi Bjorn,

Thanks and very fair reasons. Has been a hard decision, but at the end decided to not have a pole. Main reason to keep things clean around the cockpit.

Best regards,

Carl

Dear Friends,

Hereby an update on the progress made. First of all a video update from the yard: https://youtu.be/I1pjG6ygFKI?si=XP9qv5Xn_77ODtuJ

Since the video, the topsides have already been painted in Majestic Blue. Furthermore, the teak deck has been 'pre made' and will be placed around the first week of January. After that, rest of painting will be done. Please note that the boot tops are still in primer as you can see in the picture, these will be made white later.

In the meantime, we discovered that the mast is sligtly bended and unfortunately the safest thing to do is to replace it. Still working on getting different quotes, everything from a customized painted mast, to a standard Selden, and also asked Swan Global Service. In case any of you have any recommendations of a mast builder (Europe), feel free to share.

Also decided to replace the prop as the current one was a bit too big and came too close to the hull. Decided to go with a 4 blade Maxprop Easy 85 17''. Can't wait to see how that is performing.

Best regards,

Carl (41/010 - Galatea)

Dear Carl,

16 kg looks a bit light to me, and if they suggest the 21 kg I would definetly take this one. I bought my (Ultra 27 Kg as suggested me) Ultra anchor in 2015, and so far it never betrayed me (finger xssed!).

Do you know S&S Swan Association Member have a discount on Ultra anchors (and on Max Prop too)? I will send you contact details.

Fair winds!
