Hello Fernando. We recently changed from our 4.108 to a Volvo D2-55. While we are happy with the engine (it is strong and nice smooth running), we do have a few concerns. The Volvo alternator is self regulated, negative field, and if you are geared toward cruising with a big battery bank, then you know the need for an external "smart regulator". We were able to do the change, but is was with many many headaches - that continue today. Also, the Volvo has an electronic engine control "black box" for emissions management. If this box fails, and you are in a remote area, no local mechanic can help you.

The other option you might want to check out is Nanni. Nautor used these as standard fit on their smaller boats before they stopped doing smaller boats. I was very pleased with the 5 cylinder 85hp Nanni on Black Tie. Their engines in this class are based on the Japanese Kubota digger engines and are quite low revving and high torque. Gavin |

You might also want to look at Beta Engines. We changed our 4108 for a Beta 50hp year before last. (From memory the Beta 60 is the same block). We chose it becasue of 1) price (a lot cheaper than enything else), 2) no black box 3) no turbo, 4) would take our exisitng gearbox. I believe it uses the same engine block as Nanni, the Kubota. We opted for the optional alternator 175amp to run dedicated house battery charging. All wired straight into our exisitng instrumentation set etc. Very happy with it, probably covering some 2000 miles with it now. Dont forget there is good demand for the 4108; the sale of ours covered the instillation costs of our new engine! Happy sailing. Adrian |

For what it is worth the previous owner of Wotan 411-40 changed the Perkins 4108 for a Volvo D2-55HP in 2003. He had to make a slight modification to the engine box to accommodate the engine. The engine has done 2500 hours over 9 years and is still purring nicely! I put on an additional alternator for ocean cruising. It runs a Maxprop three blade propeller, I don't have the diameter. I find that optimum cruising revs is 1750 rpm using about 3l/hr.

I looked hard at the Beta38 (BV1505) to replace the 4-108 in my 41. This can be supplied with mounting feet that match the Perkins, I also intended to use the existing gearbox. The Borg Warner velvet drive gearboxes are greatly superior to the mechanical engagement PRM type, also you need an in line gearbox. I was quoted £5127 delivered to Falmouth without gearbox, but ready to fit the Borg Warner. I never worked out what to do about the exhaust system. Eventually I decided to keep the Perkins a few more years. I fitted a new alternator with smart controller, and am really quite happy with the Perkins. You just need to mop up the oil in the drip tray every month, and avoid the exhaust smoke while it warms up! regards Cosmo Little
