Christian:

I'm counting on that's a boy in the picture, first of all. I add to Matteo's congratulations, and wish you and your crew, young and old, a healthy and happy new year.

As for 2030, don't make him wait until he's 18 if he's ready sooner. I have two boys, who both like sailing quite a lot, but now at 23 and 20 y.o., neither has asked or tried to take the brass ring and run the boat. When I was a kid, I couldn't wait to run the boat - dock her, be in command, etc.....and was ready at a young age, because I wanted that. I did a lot of reading, and when we were out, always paid close attention.

I wonder what factors are involved with sailing kids, why some want to be skippers, and others not? Unless maybe I am so tyrannical as captain, but I don't think so.....hopefully it's because they enjoy sailing as crew who can often goof off and do as they please, while sailing and ashore.

Anyway, all the best to you - and fair winds,

Geoff, Corazon, 411 #41

Save that pic, you know the time will come when nobody will believe he fit in that galley sink!

Scratch that 'galley sink' comment - I must look at the pictures better - same idea, though!

Hi Christain
Congratulations - you have many years of fun to look forward to
When the sink gets too small put bungs in the cockpit drains and fill the cockpit with water.A wonderful paddling/swimming pool. When our son was 5/6 he could steer a straight course. We set the sails, came up behind other boats and then hid beneath the comings as we slid past them - the expressions on the faces of the people on the other boats was a sight to behold. When he was 16 he skippered a yacht around Britain. Now 18 he worked for 3 months last summer as a dinghy instructor. He skippers our boat - I am only the owner
You have a lot to look forward to - enjoy
Regards
Tom

Matteo, Geoff, Constantine, Tom: thank you for your kind words and interesting comments. One small remark for Geoff: it is in fact a girl :-). We have another boy and girl, and our boy, who is now 6, slowly starts to be interested in normal ships and the sea (space ships and star wars are still his favorite).
