Navigation Lantern I like the shape and robustness of the Goiot aluminum navigation lantern on our 411, so instead of replacing it with a modern LED lamp, I renovated it. The body was glass pearl sanded, the o-rings renewed, and the light bulb replaced with an LED from boatlamps.co.uk. I tried to get a new glass (Holophane 1543), contacting both Goiot and Holophane without success, so I continue to use the one I have, which is still watertight but has a crack. Interestingly, the same glass was used for airfield illumination lamps, and you still find used ones on the Internet, colored though.
Chris,
your work is very admirable and I am glad that you keep us informed.
Just as a curiosity: the outer glass of that kind of lamps is, on a smaller scale, shaped like the ones of the lighthouses, i.e. like a cylindrical Fresnel lens.
