Swan 38 - Mast height & effect
The Swan 38 initially had a shorter mast consistent with its 1 ton cup rating.
What was the last hull number with the lower mast, and does the higher mast effect the boats motion causing it to be more tender and to snap on rolls? On the other hand does it noticably improve either light air performance and pointing ability (given bigger headsail)?

Don

It is true that the 9 first yachts had the short One Ton rig, but also some higher hull numbers have  this rig, there are altogether 32 of them out of 116 built.

It is possible to compensate for this in light weather by using more overlap on the headsail and longer spi poles, although the length of the latter is restricted by the deck recess. In stronger winds the short rig has an advantage, however.

I would say that the influence on the pitching is unnoticeable, unless someone has clear evidence to the contrary.

Kind regards

Lars
