Merlin Swan 57, Hull 32

I have recently sold Outrageous Swan 47. Hull 39. and purchased Merlin. She is a ketch centreboard configuration. I would like to get in touch with other 57 owners, in paricular of the ketch centreboard variety.

Along with Merlin I received 3 boxes of charts showing she went around the world and was off the horn of Africa into the red sea in February 1982. if anyone has any knowledge of her distant past I would be most interested

many thanks

Dear Mark

I have an old IMS certificate for Merlin, then named Bravo, from 1992, and can send copy if this is of interest. She got carbon masts in 2001.
Kind regards
Lars

Hi Lars

That would be great. As I understand it she was commissioned as Bravo by the Dolan family and remained with them for many years based in the New York area.

I am looking to cruise the world in her in a few years time and am beginning to prepare her.

One issue will be an unpowered autopilot. Have you seen any models on yachts this size? Any thoughts or advice much appreciated

Best

Mark

Dear Mark

Not aware of self steering gear for this size of yacht. Ask the manufacturers if they can build one. The boomkin aft is an additional complication

Congrats Mark--

I've got 57/009 (Valkyrie), also a ketch, and getting ready for a circumnavigation starting next year.

I can't answer your self steering question, but I do have redundant autopilots; one turns the wheel - using the original Neco motor (hah!) and the other is a hydraulic ram.  If interested, I can send you some pictures.

Also, FYI, I was at Offshore Spars back in November of last year outside of Detroit, and they had the project book on the spar replacement on Bravo.  I was entertaining the idea, and pointed to that book and said "That's what I have".
