rechroming Barlow winches

I still have 4 Barlows 28s which after 46 years are looking tired, though still efficient if cleaned regularly.  Has anybody experience of rechroming these?   A couple of people I consulted locally were reluctant to do the job as the central part of the drum might become too smooth and would lose some grip.

Dear Richard
A procedure called needle peening can be used for roughening the drum surface before the rechroming.
