411 Anchor

Our 411 has a 35lb (16 kilo) CQR anchor which from the way it fits the bow roller and clamp indicates that it was probably the size provided when the boat was new.

The current recommendations for "cruising"  boats of this size are for heavier anchors, even of the newer designs, My queries are-

What was the size of the original anchor for a 411

Has anyone used a more modern anchor such as Mantus or Rocna and succeded in fitting it on the bow roller? The problem seems to be clearance between the pushpit and the roll bar of these new design anchors.

any information would be helpful.

Regards

Dear Paul,

onboard our S&S Swan 47 I have a Ultra anchor, 27 Kg., which perfectly fits on the bow roller, and as far as I am concerned I can tell you it is the best anchor I ever had in three decades.

Dear Paul

According to Swan 411 Standard Specification the anchor was a 40 lbs Danforth, stowed in the fo'c's'le, plus 6 m of 5/16" chain.
Kind regards

Dear Matteo and Lars.

Thanks both for feedback. Lars we still have the danforth, which we use as a kedge anchor, the CQR fits so well on the stem I thought that was the original. We are going to the Southampton Boat Show next week, so possibly more shopping.

Thanks again.

Paul

The 35 lbs CQR was offered as an optional item for the 411.

In my 411 where the bow roller was clearly designed to host a 35 lbs CQR, I was able to mount a Spade with very little work and I am quite satisfied by its behaviour.

Now I do not remember if it is a 15kg or 20kg but, if you are interested, I can easily check.

Dear Matteo,

I have a 21 kg Ultra anchor onboard on my 38 and I have been super happy with it. However, I have had some challenges installing it properly to the bow.

Are you able to send some pics regarding your set up?

Not sure if I posted this before (six years ago) ...

When we bought our 48, the boat was equipped with a CQR which fitted nicely into the bow roller. The anchor was held in place by tensioning the chain on the windlass -- very comfortable. Unfortunately, we often needed more than one or two attempts to get the CQR to hold in the ground, so we changed it to a Bügel anchor. The design is very similar to the Rocna.

With the different shape of the Bügel, I encountered the same problems described in this thread. The round bar (which lends the name to the German "Bügel") hit the pulpit, so it was difficult to secure the anchor in this position. What would have been needed was an extension to push the anchor outward (forward) for storage, free of the pushpit.

I had a stainless steel extension made that does exactly this. It uses the bow roller threads as an axle, so I did not have to modify anything on the boat. When we take the anchor in, the diagonal part corresponds exactly to the angle of the anchor, so when the chain is tensioned, the anchor is pulled against the extension. I attached some pictures of the construction.

Of course I am very willing to answer questions, comment on the design, or send the drawings ...

Stage 1: CQR anchor in position on the bow roller.

The extension part uses the same threads as the bow roller.

Stage 2: Bügel anchor in position.
