stancions/gate

Dear friends,

I would like to add a gate ( one on each side) of my 48' ( 1975). Does anyone know where to do it and/or which "stancions" to use?

I think I still have the original stancions ( the ones with a black top end) and if possible I would like to keep them.

Any suggestion/picture will be appreciated.

Dear Sergio

You can find some pictures showing gates on this website, but it appears there are no close-ups

The location is near the maximum beam, and you need an additional stanchion each side, and to fit the gate stanchions with diagonal supports, and eyes each side at two levels. Six new feet are needed, the support tubes and feet can be smaller. Pelican hooks are needed on one end of the gate wires at each level, the other end is usually a fork. Suggest the same type of terminals is used as on the existing wires.

You could either choose to modify two existing stanchions - the black knobs need to be removed - or save them for future use, and have four new ones with eyes and supports made up. There are also gates available from yacht equipment suppliers, but they may be somewhat different.

Kind regards

Lars

Lars,
as you are always so cooperative, I would like to extend the question to a possible gate in the aft part of a 411. Which would be a safe width with two added stanchions for solidity? Would you recommend a rigid swiveling upper link on the gate or wires are good enough?
Regards

Daniel,

Assume you mean a pushpit gate. This can be done in several ways, see for ex. how 411-013 solved it on this website. If you prefer to add a vertical stanchion it could be close to the centerline, and form one side of the gate together with the existing stanchion near the transom corner. Wires would be sufficient, if you prefer tubing the hinges and locking arrangements require some engineering and metal work skill. With tubing check that they are able to swing all the way to open position

Thank you very much, Lars.
You are right, I meant pushpit and, following your advice, I have seen the solution on 411-031, Riff. Keeping the lower horizontal tubing seems a good idea and, given the construction of the cockpit, it does not change the accessibility and maintains part of the original solidity.
A very good compromise.

Daniel

Sorry for the typing error, but you ably found out which hull number was in question.
