411 //mast motoring light // bulb
Dear professor, I am looking for a replacement bulb for the motoring mast light of a 411 and it seems to be a hard one to find. I've enclosed a photo. t has a rare 9/8 inch 21 mm bayonet socket. Any idea where I can get one? a presto Pippo

Pippo,
maybe Lars will help you better but I suggest you look at the site:
http://www.marineelectrics.co.uk
You are right that 21mm is an unusual size: are you sure it is not 22mm? In the latter case you might find easily all kind of replacement bulbs of the type BA22D.

Understand you bought the yacht in the US, could the bulb come from there?

Provided the steaming light is original European bulbs should fit. Who is the manufacturer of the light?

Kind regards

Lars

Daniel, yes the type BA22D looks rignt from the picture on their site, i'll contact them for more info. I'm not quite sure which watt 15, 25 or 40 to get, 25 seems like a good compromise. thanks for the info. Pippo 411/22

(Did not work the first time)

Running the risk of sounding like a bulb advertisement:

In running lights you can not use any bulb that fits. The lights have been approved with certain bulbs in order to show the proper angles, ranges, and colours. These bulbs must be used, and are best available from the running light manufacturer.

It must be remembered that if there is a collision at night or in reduced visibility, and investigation shows that the running lights of one party do not meet the regulations his legal position is really bad.

Pippo,
Lars is right, of course, and the only bulb that should be used for navigation lights on our boats is of the kind BAY15D with a power of 25W.
It is highly probable that the light fixture at mid mast is indeed made for such a lamp and the previous owner placed a wrong kind.
The proper lamp bulb is elongated and the filament is long and vertical just for the points correctly raised by Lars.
In particular, navigation light bulbs are distinguishable because the two pins of the bayonet are at different heights so that there is only one way to insert them.
If a BAY15D will not fit the present fixture, I would strongly recommend (like Lars kindly hints) to change it with one approved for navigation.
As I am less correct than Lars I would also recommend the classical series of a good and known German brand... very well done and dependable.
Apropos of navigation lights: last year I installed LED BAY15D´s that perfectly substitute the old incandescent ones. Just great, especially for who likes to sail at night without worrying about the batteries.
