upgrading winches

Dear Members,

I am considering upgrading the spinnaker winches to selftailers on my swan 38.

What type and size of selftailers fit best on the same location as the old winches ?

onboard 38/067 Only You I have two Lewmar 48 ST, they perfectly fit on the old ones place

I have also been thinking to update my winches on my Swan 40. May be I could change to the same as you did. Which type of Lewmar did you have before and what is the diameter  of the base on yours?

will check at home (after January 7th) the original ones, I am now onboard and am not able to answer about the original ones.

I have measured the diameter of the present winches and it seems that the lewmar 46 st is about the same diameter ?

Therefore (and because of the price diefference) I would like to go for the 46st; I mean the old ones are lewmar 44 and they served well (not too small) ?

Or do you have other experience or reasons to go for the 48 st ?

Dear Jan,

should ask a hardware specialist, which unfortunately I'm not, anyway I don't think there's much difference between 46 and 48 (anyway with 48's you've got enough power for the spinnaker guy)
