Cutter stay fitting ? Dear Members, On my 38 I have a cutterstay. The fitting however is a simple padeye with 4 nails. Does anyone has any advice on a decent fitting ?
kind regards, Jan Kooistra yulunga, 38/110 |

A supplement: In my thread it was not clear that I mean the fitting on the mast ! There is a padeye mounted with nails and ca. 20 cm below the top of the mast. Jan Kooistra |

Jan, I am afraid I can't help you with the answer, but am interested to know what you use as deck fitting, and if any kind of deck reinforcement is required. All the best for 2010. Terje. |

Dear Jan and Terjie Matteo, I would be interested to know roughly how far back from the stemhead your cutter stay is attached and what size of sail you fly on it. Thanks Richard |

Dear Terje, Please see John Baileys post of the 24 August 09, and in particular Yvon Guegan's reply and photos. His short length of track tied to the stem fitting with a rigging screw under the deck seems ideal for a second forestay ( cutter stay) fitting. I am in the process of fitting this arrangement to my 41. Stainless steel track is available from Harken at a ridiculous price. I have commissioned a length to be made from solid 316 bar at about a tenth that of the Harken price. The track will have a matching backing plate under the deck with a lug that will attach to the bottom bolt on the stem plate with a 10mm rigging screw and possibly a short length of chain. Because of the sharp rake of the bow, the angle will be more or less ideal with a direct pull on the stem fitting.

Dear Jan Suggest you take a look in the Selden catalogue at inner forestay fittings. Kind regards Lars

Dear Lars, Thank you. I had already checked their cataloge, but the rigger wasn't sure about the profile of the mast. The profile of a selden mast differs from a nautor mast. He also was afraid that after sawing the hole in the mast for the fitting he would find that the nautor mast would have some sort of enforcements inside that would prohibit the mounting of the fitting. Therefore he suggested to ask other swan owners. Can I interpret your answer so that you know that a selden cutterstay fitting (art. no. 505-011-01) will fit on a nautor mast ? kind regards, Jan Kooistra |

Dear Jan Thank you for the information. As you asked for a stay fitting my assumption was that the Selden 517 type would be suitable. It is, however, mounted from the inside, and it must be made sure that there is nothing in the way - rather difficult near the top of the mast, as your rigger pointed out. Normally a lug welded to an outside plate fastened with screws to the mast would be used. The plate needs to be made to fit the rounding of the mast front edge, and the lug to fit the stay toggle and pin, meaning a custom fitting. Suggest you consider to use one of the existing halyards if possible. If there will be a furler on the cutter stay this would work well. Kind regards Lars |

Dear Jan, We have been fitting a secondary removable stay on our 41 in 1992. Enclosed you can see the details of the attachment to the top of the mast and to the stem. Of course we have a specific tensioning system using a Wichard bottle screw. We use it with a hanked gib from 25/30 Kts up to 40/45Kts. There is a reef on the gib but we never used it! The upper attachment is as close as possible to the top of the mast, so as to be able to use one of the existing halyards, the other one being used by the furling genoa. I feel it is a bit on the weak side even though it never showed any sign of it. If it were to be done again I would probably modify the shape of the outside plate to spread the loads on a wider surface. For the lower attachment one should not be too close to the furling drum as there is a risk of chafe between the furled sail and the gib. We used the two bottom screws holding the stainless steel strap on the stem, drilled them to 12mm, and bolted “eyed nuts” to the new screws. Hope this helps. Kind regards. Philippe 41/022 |
