running backstay tensioning
Everyone seems to say the 4:1 gear is light as far as tensioning the running backstays I read somewhere last night where it was recommended to go to an idle windward winch to get a proper load on the runner (direct, not across the 4:1 gear).

I wonder has anyone got ideas in this regard? I have not sailed with running backstays before.

Thanks,
Geoff

I feel pretty foolish - went looking for the posts you referenced, saw my post and your great answer - well, it is as good today as it was - thanks again, that's all I really needed on the tensioning - but I have another question for you - since I bought myself a staysail and a trysail, I am wondering if there is any benefit to flying the staysail maybe inside a #3 jib, kind of like a cutter rig, or would that be just a waste of time and energy compared to simply flying the correct headsail standalone - ?
