S-38 Cables to mast top
Dear all, we have to change the cables of navlights and vhf antenna inside the mast. There are three heavy plastic pipes containing the cables at the lower end of the mast.
Our questions: Are these pipes running up all the way to the lamps and the mast top? How are these pipes and cables fixed to the mast?
Are the pipes necessary to protect the cables? Or is there an other technique recommended today? Thanks for any help. Best regards, Klaus

All three pipes are probably not running to the top, but at least one of them. The pipes are tied to the mast with s/s hooks - the pairs of small nuts you see along the forward edge hold the ends of the hooks.

The pipes provide excellent protection against chafe from halyards. Check if there is a thin messenger line running down from the top inside the pipe, it can be used to pull in a new cable. If there is no messenger use the old cable to pull in the new one from the top end.

Kind regards

Lars

Hi Klaus

They also stop the cables from banging around in a rolly anchorage!
