You need to look around at web sites and view a number of similar yachts, values varies greatly according to degree of restoration done.

The cost of buying an old S&S Swan is not high if not much work has been done. This is a good way to enter the scene.  Full restoration if done properly can cost anything up to three times the original purchase price of an old unrestored Swan.

But iwhen restored you end up with a yacht that will retain its value for years, if not appreciate in value. Not many yacht owners can claim that.

No easy answer I am afraid, but as not many S&S Swans were built you join a small privilaged group with a large responsibilty to yachting heritage.

I bought a 1972 Swan 40 last year in Germany for 86.500 Euro.  It was in quite good condition for its age.    Antiosmosis treatment had already been carried out on the hull.  The most obvious thing needing replacing was the teak deck which I was told was original.   In the end I am having a very extensive renovation made at the Walsted yard in Denmark - not cheap but I think a good investment for the next 20 years.    Good luck.   Richard Forrest
