Fitting a hot water cylinder / calorifier to a Swan 40

Hi,

I hope somebody out there may be able to advise me on options of where to fit a hot water cylinder / calorifier to a swan 40, which I propose to heat using the cooling circuit on the engine.

The boat at some stage had a hot water system but nothing obvious of how the water was heated and or stored, I suspect there was some form of gas hot water heater in the forward hanging locker but i am not sure.

I have been thinking about various options which are:-

1)      Placing a tank under the floor joists in the main cabin,

2)      Placing the tank above the engine under the bridge deck (not much room)

3)      Placing the tank under either of the aft berths (room? balance / trim?)

4)      Place the tank in front of the fuel tank either on the floor or under the cockpit floor. (loss of space, trim?)

5)      Or something completely different I haven’t thought of

Can anybody help?

Many thanks

Jason

Hi Jason, No advice but there was a small volume electric water heater installed under the seat at the chart table when I bought my 40. Given the power draw I removed it. Cheers. Mike from Storm Svale

Hello, Jason!

I think the most important point when installing a water heater connected to the engine cooling circuit is to be sure the highest water level of the heater system always stays below the highest part of the engine cooling circuit, heeling considered.

Best regards
