Dorade Vent Cowls
Dear members
Can you provide details on where I may find cowls for a Swan 411 Plastic or stainless) that will fit without modification? A picture of the blanking plate is shown.

I bought mine through Jamestown Distributors if you are in the States....placed the order, the parts were here in a couple of days, really dressed her up, as the old ones had discolored quite a bit.

Hello,

As written above, the cowls are made by Vetus. Not sure whether yours are "TOM"  (100mm diameter inside) or "YOGIS"  (125mm diameter inside) models.

I just wanted to share a few tricks I learned from experience:

1/ do not throw away your original aluminium rings. Buy the cheapest model (some are with rings, some are just with a flat junction plate). Just get rid of the junction plate and reinsert the cowl into your aluminium ring with a screwdriver for instance. New rings are plastic, look the same, but have a different thread!!!

2/ If your old cowls just look bad from the outside, just degrease them lightly, and paint them with a one part polyurethane paint. It works incredibly well.

Kind regards.

I changed mines on my 41 last year and I kept the aluminum ring as recommended by Philippe. I bought them from Vetus. The initial ones had been painted and thanks to UV and salt the paint was some kind of melting and they became sticky. It is not the largest expense I had to bear for during my lifting and there is no regret whatesoever.
Fair winds.

Thanks Guys
I had looked at the Vetus vents but was not sure whether they would fit. Baron will complete a refit in January 2011!

We have also replaced with Vetus cowls and as suggested kept the old rings.

In retrospect I think I should have spent the extra and gone for the S/S ones instead of the plastic.  They look much nicer in my opinion!

Plastimo sells vents/cowls that fit on a 411. They are blue inside, which is maybe not to everybodys taste. They seem to be robust with respect to UV, since two of them have been on our boat for a number of years and they look like new.
