Book Shelves
Hi All,

As one of the projects facing us in our sabbatical preparation we are looking at finding space for educational materials for the kids and books for the adults as well as putting in a flat screen for watching videos. As a result we are looking at building book shelves and some cupboards in the starboard berth in the salon of our 40. Have any of you got some pictures of what you have done to solve this issue as I need some inspiration before commencing with the realization.

Thanks in advance

Hi David,

Thanks for the picture. A nice clean installation! I am thinking of something along these lines but with cabinets at both ends. The Aft cabinet will have my SSB installed at the bottom of the cabinet. At least those are the thoughts so far.

Cheers

Dear Mike,

attached is a pic of the bookshelf which has been done onboard Fortefiore, 38/063, last year at the "Same Crew Woodworking Company", in Trinidad.

I did not see the job with my own eyes, but talked to the owner, Vincenzo, and he told me it has beeen done in a very good way. He's happy about it.

David, Baron looks gorgeous, why don't you send me some pics for the classicswan BARON page?

Fair winds to you all!

Thanks Matteo,

Beautiful interior as is BARONS!! I am going to have to get to work on my teak and koto!!

Anyway, that is a really nice job and along the lines of what I was thinking would be the way to go. The 40s have an elbow like the 41s which makes the construction a little more tricky.

A decision is in the making!!

Thanks

Mike

Hi Mike,
if you look in the section of Swans by S&S of this site, and browse the page of 411/004, Luna Menguante, you will be able to see how the shelves were made on a 411 at Nautor´s by request of the first owner. (Well, at least this is what they told to the fourth owner: me!)

Thanks Daniel,

That is an excellent job!! If I go that route it will have to be a professional job. There is a lot of detail there!! I really like the way they solved the elbow problem. Is it the same on the other side?? On another issue do you guys with the 411s have the problem of needing to create a strut from the elbow to the hull to stabilize the shrouds. The 40s seem to have a problem here which allows the deck to lift. Anyway, I am going to assemble as may pictures as possible before a decision is made about the final design.

Cheers

Mike

Mike,
the starboard side was left as in the original interior plan.
Regarding the struts on the 411, there is indeed a tendency of the deck to bulge a little around the chainplates but, apparently, it is not a severe issue and there is no need to increase the stiffness of the original setup.
As far as I understand the integrity of the chainplate assembly in the 411 is only something that should be checked once in a while, in particular at the time of purchase from another owner.

Dear Mike,

look at the book shelf onboard Pandra (38/111, her owner just joined the S&S Swan Association and sent me the pics), I think this has been done by Nautor at the origin, looks very nice!

Fair winds!

Hi Matteo

Thanks for this!! It is very similar to the one in BARON. Now I just have to decide how to include my SSB and a flat Screen in an installation like these.

All the best

Hello all!

Here is another solution which I installed on 41/022. We kept all the bunks. Sorry for the mess in the boat: photo taken during the winter!

Kind regards. Philippe
