Regarding the original setup, please browse the page on this site regarding the Swan by S&S, 411, documents, deck plan.
There are 6+6=12 winches positioned in a symmetrical way on the deck, plus a winch on the mast. If you are interested I can write the exact sizes of all of them but you may have to wait till next time I go to see the boat.
Regarding the utility to keep them all, it is a matter of personal taste. To date my idea was to maintain the original setup although I reckon that their number is surely larger than needed according to modern sail maneuvering. A wise use of sheet stoppers might reduce considerably the number of the winches together with their associated weight and encumbrance.

Corazon, 411 #41, had her winches reduced to (6), plus the winch on the mast....I feel as though she has enough to cover sailing requirements at the present rate. To me, the real gain is not so much weight reduction, but reducing the deck clutter and things to trip over.

Best of luck, Geoff

Thanks a lot for your replies. When I bought my Swan 411/39 she had only one winch installed and the holes on the deck of the others (I count a total of 14 including the one on the mast). To buy now 13 winches is a major expense that perhaps may not be justified today when comparing with modern sailboats. That is my doubt.

Thank you Rikys for your detailel answer. I understand you are alwais referring to non self tayling winches?.

Fair winds!

Indeed I forgot the main sheet winch... i.e. 12+2=14.
The two large for the genoa sheets are ST and so is the one for the main sheet. Lately I transformed the one on the mast into ST.
Very convenient for short handing the boat.

David
I am curious, why were all the winches (bar one) removed from 411/039 by the previous owner? Was the boat complete in ever other way?
Best regards

Before I acquired the sailboat all winches had been stolen except one. I imagine the thief's tools were not good enough.. David.
