Sails on a 411
I am planning to have a sail made for the staysailstay (the short movable stay in front of the mast) of my 411. According to the original sail plan, a storm jib for winds > than 50kn with following specs should fit it: LP=9ft, LUFF=35ft, AREA=158 sqft. My sailmaker is proposing a slightly larger sail, in particular AREA=183 sqft which means an increase of approximately 15%. Moreover, consider that I have a furling genoa approximately 120% LP.
My question: having the furling genoa I may indeed need a small head sail for winds, say, 30kn up. On the other hand: how many times in my life will I face a wind > 50kn? So, would it be more convenient to have a slightly larger storm jib than the one designed in the sail plan?

Thank you
Daniel

Daniel, I have fitted a staysail on Avista which has been a great move. 30knt + going upwind is no problem with good driving power and control with mainsail reefs going in as required. I lengthen the baby stay to run parallel to the forestay. Staysail size is approx 90% with clew coming down to the shrouds.

I put sheets onto the spinnacker winches so the rig can be handled by the helm alone, even tacking is easy like this.

Tried storm sail but it is much to small to be effective, I guess it should be used in + 40knts.
