Generator

I have an 18 year old 3KW 'Laser' diesel generator on my Swan 57. After hours of keeping the diesel engine alive (Farymann) the main windings have now given up and it is time to get a new one.

The space is limited as it is mounted beside the double bunk above a holding tank in the aft cabin so height must be below 23 inches. I only need 3KW as it is only running battery chargers and water heater.

My problem is that I am yet to meet anyone with a good word to say about their generator except for those with 'Northern Lights' which is much too big for what I need. It seems that making a small, reliable generator has evaded the marine industry despite the simlicity of the technology involved.

Could anyone guide me on choice, I am considering;

Mase - with a Yanmar based unit

Kohler

Mastervolt - but uses old Farymann diesel

Paguro - as above and looks similar to original

I have been warned off of Fischer Panda.

Any advice from personal experience would be great

Thanks again

Graham

Graham:

Cummins/Onan makes a 5kW unit that is very compact, just over 20 inches tall.

Kohler has a 6kW unit that is just under 23 inches tall with the enclosure on.

Hi. I'd be interested knowing what unit you finally select and how the installation process of it went. Eventually I'll have to go through the same process for a 220v generator for our 57. Thanks.

I have a 8Kva Westerbeke installed between the berths in the stern / main cabin (in insulated case with specific blower and exhaust CO2 detector within the outside wooden compartment), running flawlessly under heavy duty demand, i.e. long periods (frequently up to 30 days daily use) and conditions (high latitudes and heavy seas during long traverses like Papeete - Ushuaia or Punta del Este - Ushuaia). Apart from frequent inspection and preventive maintainance, the only replacement, besides the raw water impeller, was the raw water impeller axis kit (every 3.000 hs).

Thanks for the pictures, it looks great! How tall is the compartment in which the generator is installed? Is that a 110v or 220v unit?

Thanks.
